Birchal

Matt Vitale is the Co-Founder of Birchal, an Australian equity crowdfunding platform that brings a fresh approach to the world of private equity.

What does Birchal do?
"Help early stage businesses raise capital and build communities."

When did you start Birchal?
"Stealth: 2016; launch: 2018."

How did Birchal come to life?
"Equity crowdfunding is relatively new in Australia but has been around for many years. The UK has the most mature and active equity crowdfunding industry globally. I was working as a lawyer and observed what was happening in the UK, and recognised how equity crowdfunding could fundamentally change how entrepreneurs raise capital.

When the Australian Government started consulting with industry on whether Australia should do something similar, I got involved in the conversation and met Alan Crabbe my co-founder. We chatted about an opportunity to build an equity crowdfunding platform over the years while waiting for it to become legal in Australia, and when the opportunity arose, we applied for a licence and Birchal was born."

What's your favourite thing about what you do?
"Working with diverse and inspiring founders every day, who are working to improve the world each in their own way."
