Scam and cyberattack awareness - protect yourself with these tips

Small businesses face significant risks from cyberattacks. According to recent research, nearly half of cyber crimes are targeted at small businesses.

Common scams:

  • A growing threat from cyber criminals is invoice scams. Red flags to look out for include duplicate invoices, or changes to the bank account details on an invoice.
  • Romance scams occur when a criminal adopts a fake online identity to gain a victim's affection and trust. The scammer then uses the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and/or steal from the victim.
  • Social media scams occur when scammers set up fake profiles on social media, messaging platforms and apps. They pretend to be from the government, a real business, an employer, an investment firm, or even a friend, family member or romantic interest.

Remember:

  • We'll never ask for personal info (passwords, account numbers, PINs) through phone calls, text, or email
  • Check payment details against previous records, and call suppliers on a known or publicly listed number to verify any changes
  • Avoid sending money to anyone unless you are 100 per cent certain they are a legitimate person or business and you feel comfortable
  • Don't click on suspicious links online, in emails or via text messages
  • If unsure, call us directly on 1800-THRIDAY (1800 8474 329)
