How to check MyGov to confirm your BAS frequency
Knowing how often to lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS) can save a lot of stress - especially around tax time. If you run a small business, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will assign you a BAS reporting frequency based on your GST turnover. Some businesses lodge monthly, others quarterly, and a few might report annually. If you're unsure what applies to you, checking your BAS frequency through your MyGov account is the easiest way to confirm it. In this post, I’ll walk you through the exact steps to check your BAS frequency on MyGov so you can stay compliant and avoid late lodgement penalties.

Why your BAS frequency matters
Getting your BAS frequency right is important. Lodging too late or too often can lead to ATO penalties, cash flow problems, and unnecessary admin. The frequency determines how often you need to report GST, PAYG withholding, and other tax obligations.
The ATO assigns a BAS frequency when you register for GST, based on your business’s projected turnover:
- Monthly: GST turnover of $20 million or more
- Quarterly: GST turnover less than $20 million (and not required to report monthly)
- Annually: GST turnover under $75,000 (or $150,000 for non-profits) and you choose annual reporting
How to check your BAS frequency using MyGov
To confirm your current BAS frequency, follow these steps:
Step 1: Log in to MyGov
Go to the Online Service for Business website and sign in with your Digital ID.
If you don’t have a MyGov account yet, you’ll need to create one and link it to the ATO.

Step 2: Access the Tax registrations section
Once logged in, under Profile, select Tax registrations.

Step 3: Navigate to the Registrations table
In the Tax registrations dashboard, look for the tab titled Current, and view the Goods & Services Tax row.
Your frequency will be listed in the Lodgement cycle column. It will either be monthly, quarterely or annually.

Step 4: Update if needed
If you believe your frequency should be different (e.g. you’ve had a change in turnover), you can select the Update option, or you can call the ATO on 13 28 66 to request a frequency update.
Keep in mind that the ATO may only approve changes under certain conditions.
Can I change my BAS frequency?
Yes, but it depends on your situation. The ATO allows changes under specific scenarios:
- If your GST turnover increases or decreases
- If you are no longer required to be registered for GST
- If you opt in or opt out of annual GST reporting
Any change must be requested and approved by the ATO, and it’s best to make that change before the start of a new quarter or financial year.
Avoiding missed BAS deadlines
Once you know your BAS frequency, it becomes easier to track your lodgement deadlines. Here are the general due dates:
- Monthly: 21st of the following month
- Quarterly: 28th of the month after the quarter ends
- Annually: When your income tax return is due
Missing these deadlines can result in penalties. I use Thriday to automate my BAS preparation so I never miss a deadline. It calculates GST, pre-fills data, and helps lodge directly with the ATO—without the usual headache.
Final tip
If you’re not sure whether you’ve been moved to monthly or quarterly lodgement, especially after a growth year, don’t guess. I’ve seen businesses caught out by assuming they’re quarterly, only to realise the ATO switched them to monthly.
A quick five-minute check on MyGov can save you fines and last-minute stress.
